Apple is indeed considering the OLED screen version of the MacBook, which is currently being talked about in the industry, and its release date mainly depends on Apple’s timetable for adopting OLED for the iPad.
If Apple can release 12.9-inch and 11-inch OLED iPads in 2024, the MacBook could use OLED as early as 2025.
A supply chain report from Digitimes shows that the first MacBook with an OLED screen has been delayed. Apple is said to have originally planned to bring this display technology to the MacBook lineup in 2025, a year after the rumored OLED iPad.
The report points to some problems with the more complex display technology required for laptops, while Apple is struggling to control costs.
It was previously reported that Apple has canceled the OLED display of the 2022 iPad Air due to technical considerations. Now, similar reasons have led to the gradual delay of the OLED version of the MacBook Pro from 2025.
Judging from the current situation, Apple is slowly transitioning its product line from old panels to the latest display technology, LCD>OLED/miniLED>microLED.
Older Macs and budget iPhones still use traditionally backlit IPS LCD screens. Apple later began to popularize OLED technology from Apple Watch to iPhone X, as well as the latest iPad Pro and MacBook Pro with miniLED-backlit IPS panels. It is expected that Apple’s product line will gradually be replaced by new technologies.
Apple has yet to use miniLEDs in the iPad or MacBook lineup, but the industry expects Apple to do so sometime in 2023-2026.
And microLEDs, which are currently being hailed as the ultimate goal. Simply put, miniLED is LCD technology, while microLED is a more complex version of OLED, which is brighter and more energy-efficient, and perfectly overcomes OLED screen burn-in.
