An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on the 18th that it is understood that nine South Koreans, including Captain Lee, have entered Ukraine through neighboring countries since the 2nd and have not left the country so far.
A foreign ministry official added that many of them were believed to have entered the country to participate in the foreign military.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that it is working hard to confirm the fate of these people and urged them not to enter Ukraine without permission, recognizing that Ukraine is currently in wartime.
Former Captain Lee, a YouTuber from the Naval Special Warfare Corps, announced on social media that he had departed for Ukraine to participate in the war as a foreign volunteer.
Since the 13th of last month, all of Ukraine has been designated as a travel ban, and if a Korean citizen enters the country without an exception to the governments permission to use a passport, he will be subject to criminal punishment. Accordingly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has filed a complaint with the police against Lee for violating the passport law.
The two people who accompanied Lee to Ukraine returned to Korea on the 16th. They are expected to be investigated by the police on charges of violating the passport law as soon as the self-quarantine period in accordance with the Corona 19 quarantine rules ends.
Concerns have been raised that this could lead to mimicry of the former captain after he posted messages on social media related to his participation in the Ukraine war.
