Reporter Kang Min-kyung = The European Space Agency announced on the 17th that it was suspending the Mars exploration mission Exo-Mars with Russia.
The ESA deplored the tragic consequences of the attack on Ukraine and the loss of life, according to the AFP news agency.
ESA made this decision after evaluating the situation of the war in Ukraine at a board meeting held for two days in Paris, France from the previous day.
ESA and the Russian Space Agency were planning to launch the Rosalind Franklin rover developed to explore life on Mars around September.
The ESA board said it would conduct a study expeditiously to find other options for fulfilling the ExoMars mission.
The agency added that all other ESA missions using Russian Soyuz rockets have also been suspended.
The window that can launch a spacecraft to Mars is only once every two years. If you dont shoot this year, youll have to wait until the summer of 2024. AFP predicted that sending the rover into space without Russian help would require a tremendous amount of work.
Earlier, due to EU sanctions in response to the invasion of Ukraine, Roscosmos halted a series of launch operations and withdrew more than 100 employees from its space base in French Guiana.
