Another American has died in Ukraine, which has been invaded by Russia, Secretary of State Tony Blincoln said on the 17th.
At a press briefing today, Blincoln said he could confirm the death of a U.S. citizen and did not have further details.
Chernivu police in northern Ukraine said an American was among the civilian victims of a Russian attack on Tuesday morning.
CNN reported that the American deceased was James Whitney Hill, a native of Minnesota, who was born in 1954, an aide to the Ukrainian Interior Minister said.
Hills family also confirmed this, according to the Associated Press.
His sister said on Facebook that Hill passed away yesterday in Chernygyu, Ukraine, and that he was shot by Russian troops as he lined up with a few other people to get bread.
Ukrainian prosecutors said on the 16th that 10 people waiting in line to get bread were killed by Russian fire.
Hill, the second American killed in Russian bombing, has taught at several universities in the Ukrainian capital of Kiiu and in Warsaw, Poland.
He posted on his Facebook earlier this month that no one is safe in Cherniv. Indiscriminate bombing… . Ukrainian forces occupy the city, but are still under siege. No one could go out or come in, he said, according to the local situation.
He describes the attack by Russian forces in the besieged city as indiscriminate bombardment, and he even jokes that he tries to look like a psychic if caught.
Blincoln said US President Joe Biden had expressed his view that war crimes were being perpetrated in Ukraine, and he said it was difficult to conclude that deliberately targeting civilians was a war crime and that Russia was doing something else.
Governor Viacheslav Chaus Chernivu said 53 civilians had been killed in Russian attacks in the past 24 hours in the area.
But Russia denies the bombings aimed at civilians.
On the 13th, a former New York Times video reporter was killed in an attack by Russian forces in Arfin, northwest of the capital, Kiiu, and on the 15th, a Fox News video reporter was shot and killed in the Horenka area on the outskirts of Kiiu.
