Reporter Jeong Yun-ju = The three mobile carriers have more than tripled the publicly announced subsidy for Samsung Electronics flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
According to the mobile communication industry on the 21st, SK Telecom, KT, and LG U+ recently raised their public subsidy from 150,000 won to a maximum of 550,000 won when they were launched on the 25th of last month.
SKT has decided to raise the publicly announced subsidy from 150,000 won to 480,000 won when using the 5GX prime plan.
KT decided to raise the publicly announced subsidy from 150,000 won to 500,000 won for customers using the Super Plan Basic Choice rate plan.
LG U+ is providing 550,000 won in public support to customers who use the 5G Premium Essentials plan, up 399,000 won from the previous 151,000 won.
The increase in the disclosure subsidy for the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the first in about a month since the pre-sale started on the 14th of last month.
An official from the telecommunication industry said that since the pre-demand ends in about a month after the reservation sale, the disclosure subsidy for flagship devices is usually raised around this time, but because the demand for the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the largest, the disclosure subsidy was raised to stimulate demand.
The disclosure subsidy is provided by Samsung Electronics, the manufacturer, and the three mobile carriers, sharing financial resources in a certain proportion.
However, industry observers say that the controversy over the game optimization service of the Galaxy S22 series may have also affected the increase in the public subsidy this time.
Samsung Electronics CEO Han Jong-hee bowed down at the shareholders meeting and apologized in person after the recent controversy over the GOS function that forcibly lowers device performance when running certain apps, such as games.
Samsung Electronics updated its software in response to such controversy so that customers can choose whether to use GOS or not.
